GIF Projects

With support from GA4GH, GIF Projects put GA4GH products into practice in real-world scenarios.

What is a GIF Project?

GA4GH Implementation Forum (GIF) Projects are community-led initiatives designed to tackle challenges in genomic data interoperability by implementing one or more GA4GH products. These projects focus on practical solutions to enhance data discoverability, sharing, accessibility, and overall integration across the genomics ecosystem.

GIF Projects are defined by the following characteristics:

  • a defined road map with specific goals, outcomes, and a proposed timeline;
  • driven by one or more specific use cases;
  • active collaboration involving individuals from at least two different institutions, preferably across multiple countries.

GIF Projects play a crucial role in advancing the adoption of GA4GH standards. In turn, GA4GH Work Streams and product teams receive valuable feedback and input from GIF projects, based on real-world use. For further details on this initiative and other activities, please refer to the GIF charter.

Current GIF Projects

GIF projects aim to put GA4GH products into practice in real-world scenario. Explore our current GIF projects below.

Federated Variant-Level Matching (VLM) project

The VLM project aims to support a global federated network of genomic databases, powered by GA4GH standards.

GIF Project roles and responsibilities

GIF Projects receive the following benefits:

  • dedicated GA4GH staff support to convene other groups or individuals with similar interests and support collaboration;
  • access to a broad network of international genomics implementers;
  • opportunity to build on experiences of previous GIF projects.

Each GIF Project will be led by two or more individuals, known as GIF Champions. GIF Champions will oversee the project, and will be required to:

  • work with GA4GH staff to ensure that all required documentation is complete and up-to-date;
  • ensure that the project has clear milestones and goals;
  • designate a representative to provide project updates at GIF meetings;
  • meet regularly with the GIF leads to ensure alignment across projects and with GA4GH.
