Data Model and Schema Consensus (DaMaSC)

Explores ways to facilitate interoperability across GA4GH products and Work Streams

Historically, biomedical data has often been generated and stored in silos. This makes sharing data and running the same analysis processes across different datasets nearly impossible. In order to fulfil the GA4GH mission of expanding responsible genomic data use to benefit human health, we must avoid recreating silos when developing new standards and products.

The Data Model and Schema Consensus (DaMaSC) Study Group explores creative ways to facilitate interoperability across GA4GH products and Work Streams.

Solutions may involve articulating a GA4GH-wide strategy for data representation, recommending that GA4GH products use consistent vocabulary, or providing a central location for sharing data models or schemas.

Benefits

  • reduces the effort required to bring together data from different Work Streams by creating a common vocabulary — thus paving a path toward increased adoption
  • simplifies creating new data representations (schema) by providing a starting place for conventions, guidelines, and existing schemas

Dive deeper into this product!

Each GA4GH Work Stream gathers experts from a particular area of interest and develops standards, frameworks and tools. Work Streams operate independently and often define different vocabulary and data representation (schema) standards. This presents challenges when bringing together products from different Work Streams and hinders adoption of GA4GH products.

To address these challenges, products under discussion in the DaMaSC Study Group thus far include:

  • schema registry — a location for sharing GA4GH schemas;
  • recommendations on modelling or schema languages to be used across GA4GH;
  • definition of a strategy for describing data (such as information models or conceptual models);
  • recommendations of preferred vocabularies or ontologies;
  • provision of a forum for cross-Work-Stream collaboration on data representation.
