VRS v2.0 Specification: Open for Public Comment

26 Nov 2024

Effective representation of molecular and systemic variation across genomic resources requires a standardised, computable format. The GA4GH Variation Representation Specification (VRS) addresses this need as a universal “lingua franca” for variation, facilitating interoperability across diverse variant concepts.

First released in 2019, VRS has been adopted and proven effective in multiple contexts. Through these initial implementations, we gained valuable insights into the practical challenges and diverse needs of the community. These experiences have directly informed the enhancements in VRS v2.0, which now includes:

  • structural variation support to address increasingly complex use cases;
  • compact ambiguous variant representation for streamlined and consistent encoding;
  • metadata integration to enrich VRS objects with contextual information;
  • extensibility mechanisms to allow for implementation-specific flexibility across data classes.

These updates reflect a community-driven evolution of the specification, making VRS more versatile and robust for interoperable variant data exchange.

The VRS v2.0 pre-release is now available for community review ahead of its Product Steering Committee consideration in Q1 2024. We invite your feedback by 27 December!

Your contributions are vital to refining VRS v2.0. Thank you for helping advance this important standard!
